- Bougainville, Louis Antoine de
(11 nov. 1729, París, Francia–3 ago. 1811, París).
Militar y navegante francés. En 1764 estableció una colonia francesa en las islas Malvinas (
Falkland). Comisionado por el gobierno para circunnavegar la tierra en un viaje de exploración, zarpó en 1766. Después de hacer escala en Samoa y las Nuevas Hébridas, continuó hacia el oeste por aguas nunca antes navegadas por un europeo. Viró hacia el norte en el borde de la Gran Barrera de Coral, sin alcanzar a divisar Australia. Se detuvo en las Molucas y en Java antes de regresar a Bretaña en 1769. Su muy leído
Voyage autour du monde [Viaje alrededor del mundo] (1771) ayudó a popularizar la creencia en la superioridad moral de las personas en su estado natural. Fue secretario de
Luis XV (1772), dirigió la flota francesa que fue en apoyo en la guerra de independencia de los Estados Unidos y fue condecorado con la Legión de Honor por
Napoleón I. El género de plantas
Bougainvillea (
buganvilla) fue nombrado en su honor.
